A cross-sectional study on identifying risk factors leading to voice disorders among full time faculty members of Cebu Doctors' University: A basis for voice care program.

   The study aimed to determine the risk factors that could lead to acquiring voice disorders among the full time faculty members of Cebu Doctors' University (CDU) for the academic year 2016-2017. It utilized a cross-sectional: descriptive comparative design. Eighty-two (82) full-time faculty members of CDU participated in this study. This was conducted in Cebu Doctors' University. It utilized two (2) research instruments, namely: The Voice Ergonomic Assessment in Work Environment Handbook and Checklist (VEAWEHC), and the Vocal Abusive Behaviors Checklist (VABC).


   Results from VABC showed that early adults are likely to practice vocally abusive behaviors than the middle-late adults, with a total of 20 vocal behaviors practiced. Males of this population were found out to engage in more vocally abusive practices with 21 behaviors practiced, than the females. Also, the teachers' with longer number of years of teaching experience in CDU, with a total of 23 behaviors practiced, develop more voice abusive behaviors. Moreover, the teachers' with lesser teaching hours engage in more vocally abusive practices, with a total of 13 behaviors practiced. VEAWEHC results showed that noise, indoor air quality, working culture and practices, and aids were identified environmental risk factors leading to voice disorders for the full-time faculty members in CDU. Results from both research instruments indicated that a voice care program is needed to address these concerns in. 


   Based on the identified risk factors, the full-time faculty members of Cebu Doctors' University (CDU) practice vocally abusive behavior and are exposed to a great number of environmental risk factors. Therefore, the researchers conclude that there is a need for a program that will specifically address the voice care needs of the faculty  members of CDU. Therefore, the researchers would like to recommend a voice care program that would specifically address the environmental factors for acquiring voice disorders in CDU, a voice awareness program regarding vocal hygiene, and an evaluation of the functionality of all available voice amplification devices in the institution.
